Job tasks and duties
At Gehandicapten Sportclub Groningen (GSG), swimming lessons are given to children with mental, motor or sensory disabilities. Each pupil is given één-onéén swimming lessons for half an hour a week by a regular coach. This is to build a bond of trust with the pupil.
An approach is also taken to suit her or his level én learning ability. The aim is to achieve an achievable outcome. For one pupil, that may be a swimming certificate, for another it may be self-reliance in the water, and for yet another it may be, above all, having fun.

Minimum education level: havo/vwo
Job skills and qualities
Required diplomas’s: Instructor Swim-ABC, Rescue Swimming, First Aid.
- Swim lesson supervisors can instruct and guide.
- Coördinating tasks, such as organising diploma swims, arranging substitutes, or keeping attendance records.
- Able to empathise with the experiences of children with disabilities.
- To be gentle, patient, clear and consistent in communication to the children and their parents/carers.
- To be willing and available to attend at least ééone season (from September to July) on ééone teaching evening per week. Boarding is possible at any time during the season.
Extra information
Lessons are offered on Tuesday evenings (6:15pm – 8:15pm) én Thursday evenings (6:15pm – 7:45pm) at the Kardinge Sports Centre pool. There are no swimming lessons during school holidays. GSG works with qualified swimming instructors én with swimming supervisors (non-qualified volunteers). There are at least two instructors present per lesson evening who coordinate the lessons, supervise on the side, and direct and instruct swimming supervisors.
