Listening talent

De Luisterlijn • job opening nr. 13485

Interesting about this job

Intense, but enriching and meaningful. That is how most volunteers experience their work. It gives great satisfaction to be able to do something for someone else. What is at least as important is that you can learn a lot yourself through volunteering. It enriches you as a person.

Before you start work, you will receive training. The training consists of an e-learning part (you get 7 online modules that you can go through at your own pace and at your time) and several practical meetings where we mainly practice conversations. The training takes about 4 to 8 hours a week and lasts about 8 weeks. During the training, you will also be supervised in practice by an experienced volunteer. During the training programme, there are a few moments when we check together whether the work and the organisation really suit you. After completing the training, you will start working independently. You will also be given a home phone to borrow with which you can do the (night) shift.
Afterwards, you will also receive training and personal guidance. Because we invest heavily in our volunteers with the training courses, we aim in principle for a long-term relationship with the volunteer of preferably several years.

Job tasks and duties

In the dead of night, in the early morning or on a holiday. The Listening Line is available day and night, all year round, for people in need of a confidential conversation. Over 350,000 calls are made annually, of which about 35,000 are made via chat and e-mail. The Listening Line is called by many different people, covering a wide variety of topics.

  • The Listening Line day and night: 24 hours a day, all year round, real attention by phone.
  • The Listening Line chat: available all days of the week from 10am to 10pm.
  • The Listening Line e-mail: via a secure e-mail system.

Job skills and qualities

You have a genuine interest in another person, you do not make judgements and you have an open attitude. You are currently stable in life and would like to develop further in the field of listening and conversation. Because a lot is entrusted to you as a volunteer at the Listening Line. Sometimes topics you didn t even suspect existed. Not easy work, but certainly not boring either. Every conversation is different.

What do we ask?
Working at the Listening Line requires space in your head, heart and agenda. You work about ééone shift a week of four hours on average. You can schedule the shifts yourself. Once a month, you will listen at night to people who cannot catch sleep. The night shift naturally asks more of you than a day shift. Yet it is precisely the stories at night that make this work special. Apart from the telephone, we are also looking for volunteers for chat and e-mail help. Before you start work, you receive thorough Listening Line training. There is also a monthly learning group and training meeting.

The Listening Line aims for a long-term relationship with the volunteer of preferably several years. This is partly because of the investment in training and supervision.
Home working opportunities are negotiable at all locations.
