Interesting about this job

Foundation Hamelhuys, centre for living with and after cancer, is looking for Volunteers Psychosocial Support Oncology (VPOO) at the hospital for at least 1 half-day a week.
Foundation Hamelhuys is one of the 100 national IPSO centres in our country. At our two locations (Groningen and Assen), people directly or indirectly affected by cancer can go for a good conversation, relaxation or counselling. IPSO centres are closely linked to other (in)formal care providers and offer informal psychosocial care with a warm, homely approach a unique position in healthcare. We work hard on our mission: psychosocial care for everyone affected by cancer, accessible and close by.

In addition to our centres, we are also active in hospitals in the region. There, we deploy volunteers to offer patients and their loved ones extra time, attention and emotional support during the hospital process.
Would you like to make a real difference as a volunteer for people touched by cancer? Then this volunteer role at Hamelhuys may be for you.

Job tasks and duties

As a Volunteer Psychosocial Support Oncology, you will be present in the hospital and offer approachable, non-medical support to patients and their loved ones. You always work in coordination with formal healthcare providers and are a valuable complement to medical and nursing care. The direction always lies with the patient.
Your tasks include:
- Approaching patients and their relatives actively and respectfully, with an eye for their values, wishes and needs.
- Offering time, attention and a listening ear.
- Providing accessible information and thinking along with non-medical questions.
- Working as a bridge-builder between patient, relatives, hospital and regional care and support organisations.

This is a very important task for the patient and their relatives.

Job skills and qualities

Who are you?
You are empathetic, committed and can listen well without judgement. You are easily approachable and sense what someone needs, even if that is mainly silence or presence. You can deal with vulnerable situations and guard your own boundaries.
Experience in care is not a requirement; life experience and the right attitude are at least as important.

Extra information

What we offer:
You will work in an exceptional and learning environment where you and your fellow volunteers can make a real difference to patients and hospital staff. You will work with a fine team of coordinators and volunteers. You will develop your talents through training and intervision, including specific hospital training that prepares you to work within the hospital and cooperate with healthcare professionals. An informal atmosphere where you can be yourself, where people-to-people contact is key.
