Volunteer Psychosocial Support Oncology

Urgent
Stichting Hamelhuys • job opening nr. 14635

Interesting about this job

The Hamelhuys Foundation, a center for living with and after cancer, is looking for Psychosocial Support Oncology (VPOO) volunteers at the hospital for at least one half-day per week.
The Hamelhuys Foundation is one of 100 national IPSO centers in the Netherlands. At our two locations (Groningen and Assen), people directly or indirectly affected by cancer can find helpful conversations, relaxation, or guidance. IPSO centers are closely connected to other (in)formal care providers and offer personalized informal psychosocial care with a warm, homely approach, a unique position in healthcare. We are working hard to achieve our mission: psychosocial care for everyone affected by cancer, accessible and close to home.

In addition to our centers, we also operate in hospitals in the region. There, we deploy volunteers to offer patients and their loved ones extra time, attention, and emotional support during their hospital stay.
Do you want to make a real difference as a volunteer for people affected by cancer? Then this volunteer role at Hamelhuys might be something for you.

Job tasks and duties

As a Volunteer Psychosocial Support Oncology Specialist, you will be present in the hospital and offer accessible, non-medical support to patients and their families. You will always work in coordination with formal healthcare providers and be a valuable addition to medical and nursing care. The patient is always in charge.
Your responsibilities include:

  • Engaging patients and their families actively and respectfully, with an eye for their values, wishes, and needs.
  • Offering time, attention, and a listening ear.
  • Providing accessible information and contributing to non-medical questions.
  • Acting as a bridge between patients, families, the hospital, and regional healthcare and support organizations.

Job skills and qualities

Who are you?
You are empathetic, engaged, and a good listener without judgment. You are approachable and can sense what someone needs, even if that primarily means silence or presence. You can handle vulnerable situations while maintaining your own boundaries.
Experience in healthcare is not required; life experience and the right attitude are just as important.

Extra information

What we offer:
You'll work in a unique and stimulating environment where, together with your fellow volunteers, you can truly make a difference for patients and hospital staff. You'll collaborate with a great team of coordinators and volunteers. You'll develop your talents through training and peer supervision, including a hospital-specific training program that prepares you for working in the hospital and collaborating with healthcare professionals. An informal atmosphere where you can be yourself, where people-to-people contact is key.
