Job tasks and duties
At Gehandicapten Sportclub Groningen (GSG), swimming lessons are given to children with mental, motor or sensory disabilities. Each pupil receives half an hour a week one on one swimming lessons from a regular swimming coach. Lessons are offered on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at the Kardinge sports centre pool. There are no swimming lessons during school holidays.
The focus is on building a relationship of trust with the student. An approach is also taken that suits her or his level and learning ability. The aim is to achieve an feasable result. For some pupils, this might mean a swimming certificate; for others, it means self-reliance in the water; and for others, it means having fun.
GSG works with qualified swimming instructors and swimming coaches (non-qualified volunteers). At least two instructors are present per evening class who coordinate the lessons, supervise on the side, and direct and instruct swimming supervisors.
Job skills and qualities
- To be able to empathise with the experiences of children with disabilities.
- To be gentle, patient, clear and consistent in communication to the children.
- Demonstrate a proactive attitude before, during én after swimming lessons (asking for help or advice from instructors or fellow swimming coaches, being open to feedback from instructors, willing to help prepare and clean up materials).
- Able to swim well (at least hold swimming certificates A and B).
- Are willing and available to teach at least one season (from September to July) to several pupils on one or both lesson nights. Joining is possible at any time during the season.

Thursday from 18:15 to 19:45 (Kardinge)
A group of enthusiastic volunteers keeps the club running.
Everyone contributes for different reasons, from support worker, instructor to board member. GSG has no salaried people. If you are enthusiastic but are not yet sure whether it is something for you please contact us anyway. Together we can discuss the possibilities.
